Googs Unlimited (GU) is a newly chartered warm water conservation organization dedicated to protecting rock bass (Ambloplites rupestris) in the state of Indiana. The rock bass, also commonly known as the google eye, goggle eye, red eye, “another stupid fucking rock bass” and “the king”, is currently being threatened by habitat loss and overfishing. The rock bass is native to our waters and highly prized amongst anglers for its tender, sweet tasting flesh, noble profile, hard fighting spirit and incredible stupidity.
Since attaining 501-3C status in February 2010, GU has applied for and been awarded a grant from the USDA for habitat improvements along a 5 mile section of the West Fork of the White River above Noblesville. In June 2010 we will begin this project by adding more muck to heavily cobbled areas and rock gardens, adding more roots and downed trees to bank areas and holes and generally slowing current in all areas.
Our long range plan is to institute a trophy rock bass program. While anglers can hardly be blamed for harvesting googs in large numbers for their fine flesh and aroma, such practices reduce the number of trophy rock bass present in our creeks and streams. In the winter of 2011 GU will begin lobbying Indiana DNR to institute a slot limit on rock bass caught in the same 5 mile stretch of the West Fork of the White River above Noblesville. We propose that all rock bass between 6 and 10 inches in length be immediately returned to the water unharmed.
We are also in the process of planning a radio tracking study of rock bass movement.
